Everything You Need to Know Before Buying Your First Neon Sign: Part Two
This part of the guide is all about the practical side of our neon signs; where you’ll use it, how much to budget, what installation looks like, and how to keep your sign glowing for years to come.
5. Indoor vs. Outdoor Signs
Not all neon is made for the same environment.
Most neon signs are made for indoor use but if you need your LED neon to shine outside, we’ve got a simple solution.
Outdoor LED Neon
By combining our acrylic LED technology with waterproof transformers and plugs, we can ensure your sign is safe for outdoor use. Each outdoor-ready sign comes prewired, so none of the electrical components can come into contact with water.
How to Order for Outdoor Use
When building your custom neon sign, just tick the outdoor option on our Custom Neon Builder. If you’re working directly with our team, let us know via email and we’ll include it in your visual quote and invoice so you can confirm before placing your order.
Mounting Outdoor Signs
Outdoor acrylic LED signs are mounted just like our indoor ones. We'll cut small holes into the backing plate and include screws, so you can easily attach the sign to a flat surface. One thing to note: outdoor signs can’t be suspended, and we wouldn’t recommend trying.
Whether it’s lighting up your storefront or adding personality to an outdoor venue, we’ll make sure your sign is built to last outside.
6. Understanding Pricing
“How much does a neon sign cost?” is one of the most common questions we get, and the honest answer is that it depends on your design.
With LED neon, pricing mainly comes down to two things:
The amount of LED used. Think of it like piping: the more tubing needed to shape your design, the higher the cost.
The craftsmanship required. Complex designs with multiple lines, colors, or layers take more time to build, mount, and wire.
That’s why size alone doesn’t tell the full story. A simple name in one line at 1m wide might cost less than a more detailed logo at the same width. Complexity matters more than width.
As a ballpark, small custom LED neon signs often start in the low hundreds, while large, detailed designs can run into the thousands.
The good news? You don’t have to guess. Use our Custom Neon Builder to see instant pricing for your design, or upload your idea for a free quote and we’ll get back to you with your quote within 48 hours.
7. Installation Basics
Quick answer, they’re super simple to install.
Our signs come mounted on a clear acrylic backing with pre-drilled holes, simply hang it up like a picture frame and plug it in. For hanging signs, it’s just as simple. We’ll provide you with ceiling mounts and hanging wires, all you'll need is a drill.
For larger or outdoor installations, we recommend working with a professional installer, especially if the sign needs hardwiring or is going onto brick, concrete, or uneven surfaces.

8. Caring for Your Neon Sign
A little maintenance goes a long way.
Cleaning: Wipe the acrylic and tubing gently with a microfiber cloth to remove dust. Avoid harsh chemicals.
Avoid Overheating: While LED neon doesn’t get hot like glass, give your sign and transformer some breathing space. Don’t press it flush against fabric or flammable materials, or enclose the transformer in a place too compact.
Unplug Occasionally: For longevity, we recommend switching your sign off when it’s not in use. Our signs have a 40,000 hour shine time, which works out at around four and a half years.
